New York State
Geography and Mapping
Introduction
The New York State Data Center's Geography and
Mapping site provides interactive query access to
geographic boundary files, Census attribute data
for various levels of statistical and political
geography, and predefined thematic maps
illustrating various economic and demographic
characteristics of the population.
For the GIS user: we provide boundary files
for all Census statistical geographies, state
governmental units and legislative districts in
MapInfo, ESRI, and Maptitude formats. Statewide
files are available as well as individual
counties. The map
projection is the standard latitude and
longitude. ERSI users can use WGS1984 for their
projection.
For data analysts: we provide a large
collection of 2000 Census attribute data for the
same geographies as the boundary files including
identification code keys for linking in GIS.
For data presentation: we have a growing
collection of geographic
reference and thematic maps of New York by county.
How the Query
System Works
To download Census data and
geographic files you have to do
three things:
-
Step
1: select the location(s) you are interested
in
-
these include the whole
state, selected regions or individual counties
-
you must select at
least one area and can select multiple areas
-
Step
2: select the type of geographic unit
-
examples include county,
cities and towns, Census tract
-
you must select a
single geography type
-
Step 3: select the
file type
-
Geographic data or Census
attribute data
-
If you select geographic
data, you will be presented with an option to
select either MapInfo, ESRI, or Maptitude
format type,
-
If you select attribute
data, you will be presented with an option to
select various subject area files
Important Notes:
Some of these files, such as
the statewide block level boundaries and attributes, are very large
and are impractical for download. If you need these
files you can request them on CD-ROM by choosing the
"request" button.
Also, not all geographic types
or attribute types are available for all locations. For example:
- the county geographic type is not available for an individual county;
- the county sub-division type is not available for New York City; and
- Congressional, State Assembly and State Senate files are available
as statewide geographic files only.
You will receive a warning
message if you select a combination that is not
available.
