Changes in Racial Classification in 2000

The standards used for classification of the population by race have been revised to take into account the changing racial and ethnic makeup of the nation’s population. The Federal Office of Management and Budget announced revised standards in October of 1997 and those standards are used for Census 2000. The minimum set of racial categories now includes:

  • American Indian or Alaska Native,

  • Asian,

  • Black or African American,

  • Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander,

  • White, and

  • Some Other Race– included in the Census with special OMB approval.

For the first time, respondents may also select one or more races when they self-identify. This was not possible in 1990. Those who identified themselves as two or more races can be presented as a total category of "Two or More Races" or as various combinations of the racial categories. Reporting all of the multi-racial combinations provides data for 63 separate racial groups. Most users will rely on distributions showing the six minimal categories and the total for "Two or More Races" – this is the distribution shown here.

NOTE: The Hispanic origin population can be of any race and is already included in the racial distribution.

NOTE: Column headings are explained below.
