Census 2000 - Data Product Descriptions
(Last Updated --
September 24, 2002
)
Data from Census 2000 is being released
over a several year period. Generally,
the data products are divided into two groups
- those containing data items asked of everyone
in the country (100% or
short form items) and those containing
the data items asked of about 1 in every 6 people
(sample or long
form items). As a rule the products
based on the 100% items are released first.
Most products present data for several
levels of geographic areas, starting at the
United States and going down to the smallest
geographic level indicated for the product.
The usual hierarchy of geographic areas is:
(1) the United States, (2) states, (3) counties,
(4) minor civil divisions -- in New York - the
cities, towns, and Indian Reservations, (5)
places -- in New York - the cities, villages,
and census designated places, (6) census tracts,
(7) block groups, (8) blocks.
