TRADE MISSIONS and TRADE SHOWS
Empire State Development’s International
Division also offers New York State
companies international market exposure
through participation in selected trade
shows and missions of importance to New York
industries. These specialized trade events
let businesses directly showcase their
products and services as part of an official
New York State delegation and exhibit where
they benefit from increased visibility at
cost effective rates.
For example,
ESD has sponsored a program to
bring New York companies to CeBIT,
the world’s number one trade show and
marketplace for information and
communication technology. Held in Hannover,
Germany each year, CeBIT sets the stage for
groundbreaking technological developments
and industry alliances.
CeBIT 2003 attracted
over 560,000 visitors from 70 countries.
Since CeBIT draws the decision-making elite
from all high-growth economies,
participation in a New York State delegation
gave companies a chance to tap new market
opportunities in Europe, America, and Asia
and generate important sales leads and
international partnerships. New York’s
turnkey package typically covers exhibit
space, catalog listing, and trouble shooting
the massive exhibition and conference. It
lets companies concentrate fully on the
business aspects of the trade show and
eliminates all the worry of preparing a
booth in a foreign country.
When the first ever
CeBIT America trade show was launched in
New York City in June 2003, ESD and the New
York State Office of Science, Technology,
and Academic Research organized a New York
State Centers of Excellence trade show booth
with several businesses and organizations
from across the state. The venue gave New
York and its partners an opportunity to
showcase high tech achievements. ESD
highlighted economic development initiatives
that attract high tech businesses to invest
in New York, while NYSTAR presented recent
development in the research field.
In October 2003, Empire
State Development (ESD) announced that New York aerospace
companies negotiated sales deals totaling
$16.8 million at the Paris Air Show.
Seven New York small and medium sized
businesses participated in this major
industry trade event held in June, 2003.
The success of the show as reported by the
participants was measured
in the millions
of dollars in additional sales generated and
hundreds of new jobs created or retained.
ESD staff planned and
coordinated New York State participation at
the event, as well as offered matchmaking
opportunities, translation services, and
other personalized services at the show. A
post-show survey indicated that without
ESD’s support and matchmaking services, six
out of the seven companies would not have
been able to attend the show. All
participating companies rated services
offered as “excellent.”
Trade missions
organized by ESD for such prominent events
as The Paris Air Show, CeBIT and MEDICA
provide an excellent opportunity for New
York businesses to showcase their
specialized products and equipment, network
with an extensive range of exhibitors, and
forge important ties with new clients.
Successful trade missions give companies the
chance to expand into new markets and
increase sales and market share, which
boosts New York industries, creating jobs
and new business opportunities throughout
the state.
In support of the
industry interest, ESD has organized and
participated in trade missions to particular
countries or regions. Some recent examples
include missions to Italy, Chile, Argentina,
Brazil and Japan. These missions offer
companies and specific
industries the opportunity
to discover markets in a
collaborative fashion with ESD and its
international partners.
