New York is ranked first in the nation for number of degrees awarded in materials sciences, computer sciences and medical sciences; is ranked second for number of degrees awarded in electrical engineering, mathematics, and biological sciences; and is ranked third for number of civil and mechanical engineering degrees awarded.

Almost 32 percent of all adults in New York State have four or more years of college, and nearly 350,000 scientists and engineers call the Empire State home.

Almost 32 percent of all adults have completed four or more years of college compared to about 27 percent for the U.S. as a whole.
 
Over 8% percent of the national total of science and engineering graduate students are enrolled in New York institutions.
