New York State offers unsurpassed access to
markets, services and expertise for
businesses starting and expanding
international sales activity.
Consistently one of the top exporting
states, New York’s strength in this sector
contributes significantly to the US’
international trading position. New York
merchandise exports of $50.5 billion in 2005
accounted for 5.6% of US total exports for
which the State is ranked third in the
nation after Texas and California.
New York State’s exports rose 13.7% in 2005,
reflecting a better performance than the
national average, which rose 10.6% over 2004
levels.
As New York’s lead economic development
agency, Empire State Development administers
two customized services for New York
exporters seeking new overseas business
opportunities:
- The Export Marketing Assistance
Service (EMAS) helps businesses find
sales agents or distributors overseas.
- The Global Export Market Service
(GEMS) helps businesses expand through
increased export activity. Aimed at
small and medium companies, the program
can provide up to $25,000 in export
marketing consultant services for
individual companies and up to $50,000
for groups of companies or industry
associations. Eligible participants must
either be a manufacturer, service or
agricultural business with 500 or fewer
employees and whose New York State
production content is at least 51%.
Prior to approval, Empire State
Development evaluates a company's needs
and commitment.
New York offers businesses an array of
other services to boost international sales:
- In-house research;
- Consultations with specialists on
exporting products or services;
- Seminars to help develop and hone
export skills;
- Low cost participation in
international trade shows and trade
missions.
