The Hudson River has carved out an enchanting valley like no other in the world. The Mid-Hudson Region is the lifeline connecting upstate New York and New York City. Its legendary landscape is home to some of the world's largest, most sophisticated technology and manufacturing companies.

Location
The seven-county Mid-Hudson Region lies north of New York City and south of the Capital Region. It is a mix of urban areas, waterfront cities, rural villages, farmlands, and forests.

Market Access
The region's strategic location, largely within the New York metropolitan area, affords advantages to business and industry. The area is within a six-hour drive of 68 million U.S. and Canadian consumers, making it an ideal location as a distribution center to serve the Northeast.

Industries
The Mid-Hudson Region has a highly diversified economy, with concentrations in biomedical industries, pharmaceuticals, financial/business services and distribution. Semiconductors and microelectronics is a flourishing industry cluster that is supported by top companies such as IBM, Philips, and SCHOTT Lithotec.

Services, retail trade and manufacturing comprise the region's leading private employers. Known for high technology, the Mid-Hudson Region supports a strong concentration of scientists, engineers, physicists, computer scientists and chemists working at a number of cutting edge research laboratories. This region offers incomparable access to more than 200 world class academic research institutes, medical centers, and laboratories.

The Mid-Hudson Region has the largest concentration of Fortune 500 headquarters in New York State outside of New York City.

Apple-growing operations and wineries are rooted in several counties and dairy farms are scattered throughout the region.

Transportation
Highways: Numerous major highway routes (I-84, I-87, NY-17) pass through the region. Many converge on New York City, providing local companies with high-speed access to metropolitan and foreign markets. (NY-17 is becoming I-86 soon.)

Air Service: Stewart International Airport, near Newburgh, offers improved and ever-growing air travel services, as do county airports in Westchester, Dutchess, Sullivan and Ulster. Stewart International Airport is currently one of the first airports to be privatized in the nation, and will serve as a gateway to the worldwide market.

Rail Service: The Metropolitan Transportation Authority provides five rail lines to NYC and the metropolitan area. Additionally, Amtrak provides service along the east shore of the Hudson River. CSX and Norfolk Southern provide freight service in the region.

Bus Service: Local bus service is available in metropolitan areas; four carriers provide inter-city service and the major carriers provide intra-state service.

Port Facilities: The Hudson River joins the Port of New York and the Great Lakes via the New York State Canal System.

Education
More than 113,000 students are enrolled in 10 four-year and 22 two-year colleges and universities.

Quality of Life
The panoramic vistas of this area drew 19th-century artists, writers, and financiers to this enchanting land set beside the majestic Hudson River. Wealthy families such as the Vanderbilts and the Rockefellers were attracted to the region’s elegance and peacefulness that provided the perfect retreat from the bustle of New York City. Recreational opportunities abound in this diverse region, which includes the Catskill Park and several large state parks. The Catskill area boasts a number of large year-round resorts. Skiing, hiking, golf and water sports are popular. The region is also rich in historic sites, art galleries and museums, and has become a destination for visitors seeking antiques, farmstand products, fine dining and country inns. The area is also home to the famed Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park.
