A Message from the North Country Co-Regional Directors
If you’re interested in learning the benefits of doing
business in the North Country region of New York State,
you’ve come to the right place. The region offers a
unique mix of business opportunities and outstanding quality
of life.
The strength of the North Country lies in its diverse
economy, with sectors ranging from manufacturing,
distribution, transportation, back office operations,
tourism, and development of natural resources.
Alternative energy is an emerging sector with numerous hydro
power plants across the region providing low cost energy to
businesses in the state. The region’s proximity to
major Canadian population centers also makes it a highly
desirable location for companies serving the North American
market and for Canadian companies wishing to establish a
branch operation in the United States. The region is
the ideal location for entrepreneurs and others looking for
quality workers, strong schools and low costs in a
stunningly beautiful setting as well.
Major businesses are choosing New York to locate and expand
their operations. To remain competitive, New York State has
implemented progressive economic development strategies and
aggressive financial and tax incentives to stimulate growth
and job creation.
We are particularly proud that the North Country is home to
many outstanding and internationally known employers such as
Fort Drum (Home of the 10th Mountain Division), Bombardier,
Alcoa, Trudeau Institute, Nova Bus, Olympic Regional
Development Authority (ORDA), International Paper, Schonbek
a division of Swarovki Crystal and New York Air Brake.
The staff of the North Country Regional Office of Empire
State Development will work closely with you to identify and
fulfill your business goals. Economic development
programs are available to assist in building a new facility,
relocating a business, expanding operations and workforce,
and entering new markets and international arenas. We
look forward to working with you!

With the 2009 opening of Nova Bus’ Plattsburgh, New
York assembly plant—its only facility in the United
States—the North American leader in design,
production and marketing of urban transit buses, is
even further establishing itself as a contender for
contracts across the country.
