Introduction

For more than a century, New York State has been a world leader in innovation and developments relating to the optics and imaging industries. Today, New York State is the future of optics and imaging, as the premier location for cutting-edge, high-technological research, advancements and investments.

On May 10, 2004 New York State took an unprecedented step toward becoming the world's preeminent center for optics research by unveiling it's collaboration with Corning, Kodak and Xerox for the $119 million Center of Excellence in Infotonics Canandaigua, New York.

New York is location of choice to such leading optics and imaging firms as:

  • Konica Imaging U.S.A.
  • Xerox Corporation

The optics and imaging industries employ more than 62,000 New Yorkers, approximately 15 percent of the national total. According to the American Electronics Association, New York State:

  • Ranks 1st in the nation for employment in photonics manufacturing
  • Ranks 2nd in the nation in number of high-technology establishments
  • Ranks 3rd in the nation in high-technology employment

  • Academic Centers and Research Institutions: New York State is home to such research giants as the University of Rochester, Rochester Institute of Technology, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Cornell University, Columbia University, Syracuse University and more.
