Introduction
New York's materials processing firms are at
the forefront cutting-edge, high-technological
advancements and investments. Materials produced
in New York provide the "enabling technology"
for sectors such as electronics, computers, telecommunications,
transportation, aerospace, medical equipment,
construction and consumer products.
New York State boasts a wide range of materials
processing firms, from specialty metals finishing
operations and incubator ceramics start-ups, to
commodities producers and vertically-integrated
corporations producing both materials and high-technology
end-products.
New York State is home to many world-leading
materials process companies, including:
- Alcoa
- Corning Inc.
- E.I. Dupont Inc.
- Oneida Ltd.
- Pactiv Corp.
A testament to the State's dynamic materials
processing sector is Corning Inc.'s decision to
dramatically expand new and existing research
and manufacturing operations in the State's "Ceramics
Corridor" - a concentration of advanced materials
firms in the Southern Tier of the State. In addition,
GE Plastics chose New York State as the site for
its color express development center, showcasing
the company's leadership in state-of-the-art technologies.
New York State offers a host of resources for
companies doing business in the Materials Processing
arena. In addition to the Empire Zones, Build
Now-NY and HightechNY.com programs,
specific support for this industry's research
and development, and for the commercialization
of new advanced materials through incubators,
has been fostered by New York State Centers for
Advanced Technology (CATs) http://www.nystar.state.ny.us/cats.htm.
At each CAT, researchers at New York's leading
research universities work side-by-side with their
counterparts in large and small companies to develop
new technologies. The CAT Program capitalizes
on New York's outstanding university research
resources, and uses those resources to help New
York businesses gain a technological edge on their
competition.
The CATs most involved in materials research
include: the Center for Advanced Ceramic Technology
and the Center for Glass Research at Alfred University;
the Center for Advanced Materials Processing at
Clarkson; the NYS Center for Advanced Thin Film
Technology at Albany; the Integrated electronics
Engineering Center at Binghamton University; and
the NYS Center for Advanced Technology for Ultrafast
Photonic Materials and Applications at the City
College of the City University of New York.
New York's State's re-newed business-friendly
