Introduction
New York State's unparalleled market proximity and
host of resources and incentives specifically designed for distribution centers
gives New York-based businesses a distinct edge over the competition, making New
York the premier location to build and locate your distribution center.
The April/May 2001 issue of Plants, Sites & Parks magazine named Kmart's
recent announcement to invest $120 million to construct a 1.4 million square feet
distribution center, creating 1,000 new jobs, in Montgomery County as one of the
"Top 25 U.S. Business Projects" based on new jobs.
Furthermore, Gap Inc. is investing $210 million and creating 1,500 new jobs
to construct one of the world's largest distribution centers in Dutchess County,
New York. Site Selection magazine chose the phase I Gap project as one of the
nation's "Top 10 Deals" of 1998.
New York State is also home to other
major distribution centers, such as:
| Wal-Mart |

New York State is supporting third party distribution centers through legislation
that permits out-of-state companies to warehouse
merchandise with New York "fulfillment centers" without making such
companies subject to New York taxes. This law clearly provides that the use of
a New York fulfillment service business (other than an affiliated business) will
not create a nexus between the out-of-state business and New York State for purposes
of New York sales and corporate tax.
In addition, New York State also partners with local community colleges and workforce
development organizations to offer training programs for all facets of distribution
center operations - everything from forklift training to logistics training for
executives.
