Introduction

New York State has emerged as a world center of burgeoning technologies and is a national leader, with companies dedicated to such fields as optoelectronics, bioinformatics, nanotechnology, computers, electronic components, measurement and process control devices.

IBM's decision to invest more than $4 billion in Upstate New York, to build one of the world's most technologically advanced chip-making plants, sends a powerful message around the world that New York State is the premier location for high-technological investments and advancements.

Following on the heels of IBM's decision to locate its $300 million fab in New York, International SEMATECH announced that it will locate a $400 million research and development center at Albany NanoTech, located on the University at Albany campus. Shortly thereafter, Tokyo Electron announced that it too would locate a $300 million research and development effort at Albany NanoTech, placing New York at the center of cutting-edge semiconductor research and development.

New York State is also home to other leading computer hardware and electronics companies such as:

  • IBM Corporation
  • Philips Semiconductors
  • EDO Corporation
  • Sanmina-SCI Corporation
  • Northrop Grumman
  • Symbol Technologies
  • Lockheed Martin
  • BAE SYSTEMS
  • Tokyo Electron
  • International SEMATECH
  • Endicott Interconnect Technologies

Investments in New York State by IBM and these other leading computer hardware and electronics companies exemplifies the private sector's confidence in New York State's pro-business climate and underscores that New York is the place to locate and expand your computer hardware or electronics business.

New York State's high-tech infrastructure offers a host of resources and incentives for businesses in the computer hardware and electronics industries:

According to the American Electronics Association's Cyberstates 2005 Report, New York State ranks:

  • 3rd in the nation in total high-tech employment and payroll
  • 4th in the nation in high-tech establishments
  • Among the top five states for employment in Computers and Peripheral Equipment Manufacturing, Electronic Components Manufacturing, Defense Electronics Manufacturing and Photonics Manufacturing.
  • Incentives/Initiatives: The State is aggressively preparing for growth in the computer hardware and electronics industries by offering "shovel ready" sites for future manufacturers as well as a host of financial incentives available through such initiatives as the Empire Zones Program. In addition, the State boasts a world-class high-tech workforce.
  • World-Class Academic and Research Institutions: Many of New York's world-class educational and research institutions, such as the Center of Excellence in Nanoelectronics at the University at Albany, are dedicated to the nanoelectronics and electronics industries. In an important step in the State's effort to attract semiconductor industries, several of New York's top universities, including Cornell University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and SUNY at Stony Brook, were chosen as part of the prestigious, collaborative research effort known as Focus Center-New York.
